General Motors acquires Pit Rho Race Analytics software

Real-time motorsports strategy software Pit Rho Race Analytics – developed by the Pit Rho Corporation ­– has been acquired by General Motors (GM).

As part of the acquisition, GM will also acquire Pit Rho’s key team members from the areas of data science, operations and software engineering.

At NASCAR events, the cloud-based Pit Rho Race Analytics takes in each entrant’s telemetry, lap time and pit stop data. This is then put through a machine and deep learning model to predict multiple race variables including competitor behaviors. During each lap, the program makes one million calculations that can help teams to choose the best race strategy, aided by artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Following the acquisition, GM will expand the use of the analytics software across NASCAR, IMSA and Indycar. The software is currently used by GM’s Charlotte Technical Center to provide support to the company’s teams when competing in events within the USA and internationally.

“With this acquisition, we are strengthening our support of GM factory teams and helping them remain competitive at the highest levels,” said Eric Warren, director of NASCAR programs at GM. “Pit Rho has been a leader in developing cutting-edge, machine-learning-based strategy software for the last decade and we believe that tighter integration with GM will improve functionality and outcomes across the board.”
