BWT Alpine F1 team gains FIA Three-Star environmental accreditation

The FIA has awarded the BWT Alpine F1 team with Three-Star Environmental Accreditation following an official on-site environmental performance audit in December 2022 of the Enstone facility in the UK, and a remote audit of the Viry Châtillon site in France.

The FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme aims to help international motorsport and mobility companies measure and improve their environmental performance by reviewing best management practices for energy use, biodiversity and overall carbon emissions.

The Three-Star accreditation reflects the team’s progress: Alpine F1 has set up an efficient environmental management system as well as operational initiatives, including include bottle free zones trackside and at the Enstone facility. The site has been sourcing its energy from renewable sources since 2004 to power its factory.

The Viry Châtillon site – which has been certified ISO 14001 since 2011 – has implemented several sustainable processes, including biowaste sorting, the removal of single use plastic cups, and a 95% reduction of use of solvents for cleaning parts.

“We are pleased to announce our FIA Three-Star Environmental Accreditation,” said Otmar Szafnauer, team principal, BWT Alpine F1 Team. “It is a great step forward in our environmental roadmap. We are now working toward securing ISO 14001 accreditation for Enstone, which sits within the framework of Alpine’s Sustainability Strategy. Our decarbonization journey is well underway, and we look forward to sharing more positive milestones in the near future.”

Felipe Calderón, president of the FIA Environment and Sustainability Commission, commented, “I’d like to congratulate the Alpine F1 Team for achieving the highest Three-Star Environmental Accreditation level from the FIA – from the drivers, engineers, mechanics, staff, managers, investors and all the team members, it takes a commitment at every level to achieve this status. The team has demonstrated best practice in their operations, as well as solid plans to carry these policies forward into the future.

“Stakeholders in Formula 1 teams and across the motorsport landscape have engaged admirably with this crucial program that we believe provides a great foundation for developing their environmental management systems. These topics are only becoming more and more significant over time, and we must continue to use the platform we have to be leaders and pioneers in the activities and technologies we utilize every day.”
