Dinner with Racers series explores Fangio's 1958 kidnapping
The latest offering from the Dinner with Racers duo of Sean Heckman and Ryan Eversley was released today, featuring visits to Argentina and Cuba to tell a four-part story about five-time F1 world champion Juan Manuel Fangio kidnapping in 1958.
“The story of the Cuban Grand Prix and Fangio’s kidnapping is one we’re very happy to present,” Eversley said. “I’d only heard about it when the possibility of the project came up, and it seemed to fit DwR perfectly. We met some amazing people along the way and we’re excited to share the variety of characters, stories, and locations involved.”
For filmmaker Heckman, whose previous projects range from the life of 1989 NASCAR Cup champion Alan Kulwicki to Pacific Coast Motorsport’s attempt to qualify for the 2008 Indianapolis 500, the need to find and tell stories that fall outside mainstream topics continues with “Kidnapping Fangio” in partnership with DwR’s longtime sponsors.
Interview subjects range from Juan Manuel Fangio II to the kidnapper and getaway driver.

“At the time we decided to do this project, it had only been a footnote on Fangio’s illustrious career and we felt this was something we could really delve into,” he said. “The story itself is full of nuance and idiosyncrasy, and when we formulated how best to tell it we came up with a concept that we hope our fans will like. Thanks to supporters like Continental Tire we’re fortunate to have a lot of license in how we tell these stories, and we wanted to really try an approach that was different from anything else out there.”
The four-parter will drop one new episode per week and can be found on MotorTrend’s YouTube channel.
