E1 World Championship: Pioneering Sustainable Racing and Environmental Impact
Rodi Basso, CEO and co-founder of the E1 World Championship, took center stage during EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, sharing insights on the groundbreaking electric boat racing series. From the debut season’s success to the championship’s innovative technological, environmental, and cultural impacts, Basso detailed the vision driving E1 to become a global force in sustainable motorsport.
Turning Vision into Reality
Basso reflected on the journey of bringing the E1 World Championship to life. Conceived five years ago in partnership with Alejandro Agag, E1 has grown from a bold concept to an operational championship. The innovative RaceBird boats, built on hydrofoil technology for efficiency and zero environmental impact, completed a successful first season in 2024.
“After four years of development and engineering, E1 has become a meeting point for powerboating, motorsport, and sailing enthusiasts,” said Basso. “It’s more than just a racing series—it’s a platform to inspire change in water mobility and environmental responsibility.”
Environmental Stewardship as a Core Mission
A passionate advocate for sustainability, Basso emphasized E1’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and fostering positive change. Central to this mission is the integration of cutting-edge technologies, such as electric propulsion and hydrofoil designs, which eliminate emissions and reduce coastal erosion by minimizing wave impact.
“Over half the world’s population lives near water, making the preservation of aquatic ecosystems critical,” Basso explained. “Through partnerships with renowned scientists like Carlos Duarte, we’re advancing marine regeneration projects, developing infrastructure for electric mobility, and promoting environmental education.”
Iconic Locations and High-Profile Partnerships
E1 races in iconic global venues such as Venice, Monaco, and Lake Como, selected for their relevance to water conservation and environmental challenges. These locations amplify the championship’s message while providing a visually stunning backdrop for intense competition.
Basso also highlighted the league’s celebrity team owners, including Tom Brady, Will Smith, Rafael Nadal, and Sergio Perez. “These individuals join not only for the excitement but because they see the impact of E1’s message and the potential for a sustainable business model,” he said.
High-Performance Meets High Purpose
The RaceBird boats deliver thrilling speeds of up to 50 knots (200 horsepower equivalent) while prioritizing efficiency. Basso described the engineering approach as a shift from a traditional focus on maximum speed to embracing acceleration and sustainability.
“Efficiency is the new frontier for engineers,” he stated. “Our focus on innovation challenges paradigms and offers a glimpse into the future of responsible racing.”
Season 2 and Beyond
As the championship prepares for its second season, which kicks off in Jeddah in January 2025, E1 promises even more excitement, including new venues and enhanced race formats. Basso teased a highly anticipated U.S. race, set to conclude the 2025 season, emphasizing its iconic location and collaborative planning with one of the championship’s team owners.
E1 also aims to leave lasting legacies at each venue. Initiatives include installing electric charging infrastructure, regenerating coastal areas, and engaging local communities through education and job creation.
“We’re committed to ensuring that every race leaves a positive environmental and social footprint,” Basso added.
A Bold Future for Racing and Sustainability
Basso’s appearance at EPARTRADE’s Race Industry Week underscored the championship’s unique position at the intersection of motorsport, sustainability, and technological innovation.
“E1 is more than a racing series—it’s a movement,” Basso concluded. “We are showcasing that environmental responsibility and financial success can coexist, setting an example for industries worldwide.”
