Formula E announces technology partnership with Google Cloud

Ahead of its upcoming race this weekend at São Paulo’s Sambadrome in Brazil, Formula E has unveiled a new multi-year technology partnership with Google Cloud.

The collaboration aims to enhance both on-track and off-track performance in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship by leveraging various Google Cloud technologies. This includes scalable cloud infrastructure, data analytics and generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) tools in the GENBETA Race Car Development Programme.

This partnership builds upon Formula E’s existing relationship with Google Cloud, which began with Neom McLaren Formula E Team driver Jake Hughes setting an indoor land speed Guinness World Record.

Hughes used a gen AI ‘DriverBot’ developed by Google Cloud as part of Formula E’s race car development program, which combined real-time car data with historical race data.

In the new partnership, Formula E and Google Cloud will focus on three key areas:

Sporting Development: Using advanced data analytics and generative AI tools to enhance the GenBeta Programme, which is aimed at pushing the boundaries of motorsport technology.

Fanbase Growth: Leveraging Google Cloud technologies to analyze extensive data sets of fan behavior, preferences and demographics.

Sustainability Leadership: Scaling access to Formula E’s Girls on Track program, which aims to provide opportunities for young women to pursue careers in motorsport.

Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, said, “Our multi-year technology partnership with Google Cloud is clear evidence of the scale of our ambition in establishing Formula E as the world’s most innovative, exciting and fastest-accelerating sport. We began our collaboration by setting a world record and are hugely ambitious about what’s next.”

Laurence Lafont, VP of strategic industries EMEA at Google Cloud, said, “Google Cloud is excited to partner with Formula E to bring the cutting edge of cloud technologies to the thrilling world of electric racing. Together, we’ll accelerate innovation on- and off-trac  and build the future of sustainable motorsport.”
