Formula E partners with Google

Formula E has announced a new multi-year partnership with Google Cloud which it says will help the championship develop both on- and off-track.

The partnership is an expansion of an existing deal, which began last year when Jake Hughes broke the indoor speed record in Formula E’s GENBETA car (pictured above) — effectively a derestricted version of the series’ current race car which is a testbed for new technologies and the upcoming GEN4 car.

For the 218.7km/h (135mph) run at London’s ExCeL exhibition and event space last summer, Google Cloud-developed AI dubbed “DriverBot” harnessed real-time data from the car and collaborated it with historic race data to enable Hughes and the team of engineers working on the car engineers to get the most out of the car. They went on to beat the existing indoor speed record by over 50 km/h.

“Google Cloud is excited to partner with Formula E to bring the cutting edge of cloud technologies to the thrilling world of electric racing,” said Laurence Lafont, vice president, strategic industries EMEA, Google Cloud. “Together, we’ll accelerate innovation on and off track, and build the future of sustainable motorsport.”

Formula E’s chief marketing officer Henry Chilcott, added: “Alongside the pioneering work to harness the power of gen AI to drive performance in our GENBETA program, the next stage of this partnership will help us unleash a powerful new phase of fan base growth by putting the full force of Google Cloud technologies behind our marketing efforts.”

The extended deal between Formula E and Google will see the championship continue to utilize Google’s AI technology, as well as scalable Cloud technologies to aid sporting development and sustainability. It will also analyze fan data to help the series tailor its marketing campaigns.

“Our multi-year technology partnership with Google Cloud is clear evidence of the scale of our ambition in establishing Formula E as the world’s most innovative, exciting, and fastest-accelerating sport,” said Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds. “We began our collaboration by setting a world record and are hugely ambitious about what’s next.”

The 2023-24 Formula E season continues with Round 4 in Sao Paulo this Saturday.
