Gevo to supply renewable low-carbon racing fuel to Shell

American renewable chemicals and biofuels company Gevo has entered a purchase agreement with Shell Global Solutions (Deutschland) to supply low-carbon intensity fuel blendstock for use in motorsport. This renewable blendstock, developed by Gevo, is designed to meet the demands of high-performance racing while also providing lower carbon emissions.

Gevo’s renewable fuel blendstock is engineered to enhance net energy storage and reduce carbon emissions, making it suitable for premium motorsport fuels. This agreement underscores the potential for sustainability in motorsport without compromising on performance.

The production process of the fuel utilizes sustainable feedstocks such as agricultural waste. These feedstocks comply with the EU Renewable Energy Directive Annex IX requirements, contributing to the development of low-carbon fuel solutions in the racing industry.

“This is an important step toward a sustainable future,” commented Damien Perriman, Gevo’s chief business development officer. “With products like renewable fuels for all modes of transportation, specialty additives for lubricants and sustainable chemicals that replace outdated technologies, Gevo is thrilled to drive this transformation.”

Matthias Mundt, general manager of the fuels technology future mobility portfolio at Shell, added: “As a supplier of specialty fuels to racing series around the world, Shell is focused on improving sustainability while maximizing efficiency and performance, such as with the 100% renewable race fuel we developed for the NTT IndyCar series. We are pleased to collaborate with Gevo to explore the possibilities provided by their low-carbon intensity products.”
