Legacy Motor Club named Michael Guttilla president
LEGACY MOTOR CLUB has named veteran automotive and motorsports executive Michael Guttilla as CLUB President, bringing nearly four decades of engineering and leadership experience to the organization.
Guttilla most recently served as chief operating officer at Joe Gibbs Racing. Prior to that role, he spent more than 20 years with global engineering firm Multimatic, serving as Vice President of Engineering and R&D and Vice President of Global Sales & Marketing. During his tenure, Guttilla led a global engineering team of more than 300 people and helped develop advanced vehicle technologies used in top-level motorsports and high-performance production vehicles.
“Michael’s leadership and technical expertise will be a tremendous asset as we continue building the future of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB,” said Jimmie Johnson, owner of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. “He understands both the competitive and business sides of this sport, and we’re excited to welcome him to the CLUB.”
A graduate of Michigan State University, Guttilla began his career with General Motors and Mechanical Dynamics, Inc., helping advance vehicle simulation technologies that became widely adopted across the automotive and motorsports industries.
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with leaders and mentors who invested their time, knowledge and trust in me,” Guttilla said. “Coach Gibbs and the entire Joe Gibbs Racing organization are the most recent example of that support, and before that the founder and teammates at Multimatic. I’m honored by the opportunity to bring those experiences to the incredible team Jimmie and Cal have built and to help execute and accelerate Jimmie’s mission, vision, and values for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB.”
Guttilla’s experience within the Toyota racing ecosystem also positions him to maintain and strengthen key manufacturer relationships.
“I’m also excited to continue working closely with TRD,“ Guttilla continued. “The collaborative spirit of ‘coopetition’ they foster among Team Toyota partners elevates everyone’s performance and strengthens the entire program. Together, our focus will be on building the kind of organization and culture capable of competing for wins and championships year after year.”
"The addition of Michael Guttilla is another example of LEGACY investing in and building the kind of organization needed to compete with the top teams in NASCAR,” said Tyler Gibbs, president of Toyota Racing Development (TRD), U.S.A. “Michael will be a strong complement to Cal and the entire LEGACY team. I want to thank Coach and JGR for allowing Michael and LEGACY to pursue this opportunity. This move only highlights the collaborative nature our partner teams continue to exhibit, which reinforces one of Toyota’s key values in motorsport."
Principals at Joe Gibbs Racing worked collaboratively with ownership at LEGACY MOTOR CLUB to facilitate the move, with full support from both organizations.
“We really appreciate Michael’s guidance and leadership over the past few years,” said Joe Gibbs, owner and founder of Joe Gibbs Racing. “We are happy that he will be able to continue to contribute to the Toyota family in his new position.”
Cal Wells III, CEO of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB said Guttilla’s experience and leadership will play a key role in the organization’s continued growth.
“Michael has spent his career building world-class engineering organizations and delivering performance at the highest levels of motorsports and automotive innovation,” Wells said. “His ability to connect technical excellence with team leadership makes him an outstanding fit for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB as we continue strengthening our competitive foundation and building for the future.”
Reporting to Wells, Guttilla will oversee several aspects of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB’s operations with an official start date of April 8, 2026.
