Supercars to review Safety Car procedure rules

Supercars' Commission is set to review the category’s Safety Car procedure regulations ahead of the Ryco Enduro Cup.

Safety Car regulations stepped into the spotlight at the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440 following a dramatic final race.

In 2025, for full Safety Car periods, drivers have 15 seconds to reduce their speed to maximum of 80km/h and engage the speed limiter.

The Safety Car was called on lap 30 of 63 when Matt Stone Racing wildcard Cameron Crick was sent into the Turn 6 gravel trap with a stuck throttle.

The field was required to slow to 80km/h on the Safety Car limiter, with the race restarting on lap 37.

In that Safety Car period, three cars running long on strategy — Cam Waters, Kai Allen and Andre Heimgartner — cleared their compulsory pit stops and cycled to the front, despite qualifying outside the top 18.

Before the Safety Car, leader Broc Feeney was over 25 seconds clear of that trio, but restarted fourth. Feeney ultimately won, with Waters, Allen and Heimgartner finishing second, third and seventh.

Supercars Chief Motorsport Officer Tim Edwards said: “The matter will be discussed and potential changes considered at next week’s Commission meeting.”

It comes after the Full Course Yellow rule was removed for 2025, following consultation between Supercars and Motorsport Australia.

The 15-second countdown remained in place for Safety Car periods in 2025, with a key motivation to remove the FCY rule to encourage teams to be aggressive with strategy.

Tickets for the AirTouch 500 at The Bend and Repco Bathurst 1000 are on sale now.
