American Flat Track Thrives with Innovation and Passion: Insights from Cameron Gray and Bryan Smith at EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week
American Flat Track (AFT) continues to innovate and grow, blending tradition with modern developments in motorsport. During EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, Cameron Gray, Director of American Flat Track, and Bryan Smith, 2016 Grand National Champion and founder of Bryan Smith Racing, shared their insights on the evolution, challenges, and future of flat track racing.
A Deep Legacy, Modern Growth
Flat track racing, heralded as the "original extreme sport," dates back to the first AMA Grand National Championship in 1954. Gray, who has been with AFT for nearly a decade, emphasized the sport’s rich history and ongoing growth. “Flat track is motorcycles at their most raw and exciting,” Gray said, referencing iconic venues like Springfield and the historic connection between the sport and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
Bryan Smith, known as the "Mile Master," added his perspective as a champion turned organizer: “Flat track is a gritty, high-speed challenge. Having raced for years, it's rewarding to now help grow the sport from the other side of the fence.”
Rising Competition and the Impact of Production-Based Classes
AFT’s move toward production-based classes aims to level the playing field and reduce costs for competitors. Smith noted, “We’ve moved away from the ‘Wild West’ approach of custom builds to a model that ensures affordability and close competition. This is some of the best racing we’ve ever seen—100 mph, sideways battles.”
The 450 Singles class continues to captivate fans with nail-biting action, while the SuperTwins class ensures a top-tier competitive field. New categories, such as the Adventure Trackers, reflect the evolving landscape of motorcycle racing, tapping into the growing adventure bike segment. Smith praised their versatility, calling them “a surprising joy to race and a perfect addition to our program.”
Innovative Events: The Miracle on Main Street
Highlighting AFT’s ability to think outside the box, Gray and Smith discussed the groundbreaking Sturgis TT: Miracle on Main Street race, held in downtown Sturgis. This unique event transformed city streets into a racetrack, blending pavement and dirt in front of thousands of fans.
“It was a massive undertaking,” said Gray. “From logistical challenges to last-minute adjustments, it took an incredible team effort to pull it off. And the result was a thrilling race that introduced flat track to a whole new audience.”
Smith reflected on the riders’ reactions: “Some were skeptical, but by the end, they were asking when we could do it again. Events like this bring flat track racing back to its roots while pushing its boundaries.”
Strong Partnerships Fuel Growth
AFT continues to thrive thanks to partnerships with major brands like Progressive Insurance, Mission Foods, Caterpillar, and Flow Racing. The latter has significantly expanded AFT’s reach, introducing the sport to fans of dirt track car racing. Gray emphasized, “Our partnerships are vital to sustaining growth and ensuring fans and riders get the best experience.”
Looking Ahead to 2025
As AFT gears up for its 2025 season opener at Daytona Beach, excitement is building. With 16 rounds, including marquee events at Sturgis and the Lake of the Ozarks, Gray and Smith are optimistic about the future. Gray hinted at even more innovation, including the potential revival of historic tracks and the addition of new classes.
“We’re making noise,” Gray said. “Flat track has deep roots, but our eyes are firmly set on the future. From modernizing competition to staging unforgettable events, AFT is carving its place in motorsport.”
Join the Action
With just months until the Daytona season opener, flat track racing promises to deliver edge-of-your-seat excitement in 2025. AFT’s blend of history, innovation, and passion ensures it remains one of the most captivating motorsport series.
