Adrien Le Pan de Ligny, Development Lead of Motorsports Events for the Dakar Rally, captivated attendees at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week with an insider’s view of the Dakar Rally, one of the world’s most demanding motorsport events. Sharing details about the 2025 edition and groundbreaking initiatives like Dakar Future and Mission 1,000, Le Pan de Ligny highlighted how Dakar continues to redefine endurance racing.
The Route: A Year in the Making
Scheduled from January 3–17, 2025, the Dakar Rally will traverse 12 grueling stages across Saudi Arabia, challenging competitors with its vast desert landscapes and intense navigation requirements. Le Pan de Ligny described the intricate planning process behind the rally, which involves year-round scouting and route design.
“A dedicated team spends months exploring potential paths, ensuring every stage provides unique challenges,” he said. “We strive to maintain Dakar’s legendary difficulty while reimagining it with new elements like the successful 48-Hour Chrono stage, which brings competitors back to Dakar’s camping roots.”

The Dakar Rally welcomes a wide array of participants, from professional teams to amateur adventurers. With categories including motorcycles, side-by-sides, stock cars, and elite prototypes, the rally is a melting pot of motorsport disciplines.
“This year, we’ve revamped the regulations for the stock category to make it more accessible for manufacturers, allowing them to showcase off-road capabilities with everyday vehicles,” explained Le Pan de Ligny. “While this development will fully launch in 2026, it signifies Dakar’s ongoing evolution.”
Unmatched Logistics and Media Presence
Le Pan de Ligny shed light on the immense logistical operation behind Dakar. With 3,500 personnel, 440 racing vehicles, and support trucks traveling hundreds of miles daily, the event resembles a mobile village in the desert.
“Safety and coverage are paramount,” he emphasized. “Fifteen helicopters, satellite tracking, and a team of 300 media professionals ensure that every moment, from thrilling action to inspiring human stories, reaches global audiences. Our daily highlight program airs in 290 countries, complemented by robust digital content tailored for younger viewers.”
Mission 1,000: A Platform for Innovation
Dakar’s commitment to sustainability and technological advancement is exemplified by Mission 1,000, a unique initiative aimed at showcasing alternative propulsion technologies.
“This is not a race but a challenge for innovation,” said Le Pan de Ligny. “Vehicles powered by hydrogen, electric, or hybrid systems tackle a dedicated 1,000-kilometer route. The program highlights the intersection of motorsport and real-world environmental solutions, providing a testbed for the future of mobility.”
Expanding the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC)
As the crown jewel of the World Rally-Raid Championship, Dakar is central to this global series, which includes events in South America, Africa, and Europe. Le Pan de Ligny explained that the championship allows manufacturers and competitors to maintain visibility year-round and train for Dakar’s rigorous demands.
“The W2RC elevates rally-raid’s standards while giving teams a platform to showcase their capabilities globally,” he noted.
A Legacy of Adventure and Responsibility
Beyond competition, Dakar embraces its role as a catalyst for positive change. Initiatives like Dakar Future and Responsible Dakar emphasize sustainable practices, while outreach programs foster education and technology transfer in host regions.
“Whether through coastal restoration projects or innovative mobility solutions, Dakar’s legacy extends far beyond the finish line,” said Le Pan de Ligny.
