Doug Yates and John Dodson Discuss Building the Future of Motorsports at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week
The future of motorsports is being shaped by collaboration, innovation, and education, as highlighted during a panel discussion with Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines, and John Dodson, VP of Business Alliances & NASCAR at Universal Technical Institute (UTI), at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week. The session offered insights into workforce development, the evolution of motorsports, and the power of partnerships in driving industry success.
A Partnership Forged in Racing Excellence
The relationship between Roush Yates Engines and UTI began in 2004 when Yates needed skilled workers for his newly formed engine shop, following a merger with Roush Racing.
“I called John [Dodson] and said, ‘I need hardworking people,’” Yates recalled. “That year, we hired 10 UTI graduates, and many are still with us today.”
Since then, Roush Yates Engines has hired over 170 UTI graduates, with 30% of its workforce coming through the program. This collaboration has fueled both organizations’ growth and contributed to significant milestones, including championship victories.

Empowering Careers Through Education
Dodson emphasized the importance of UTI’s NASCAR Technical Institute in preparing students for the demands of motorsports and beyond.
“Our graduates are thoroughbreds,” Dodson said. “They come from all over the country, leaving families behind to pursue their dreams. We instill professionalism and a winning mindset, which employers like Doug Yates value.”
UTI offers a variety of programs, including automotive, diesel, and CNC training, ensuring students leave with valuable, transferable skills.
Driving Innovation and Opportunity
The panel also highlighted Roush Yates Engines’ commitment to innovation, from manufacturing next-gen components for NASCAR to building engines for prestigious international events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
“In 2016, we went back to Le Mans 50 years after Ford’s historic win and brought home the victory,” Yates shared. “It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do.”
Looking ahead, Yates spoke about the growing influence of electrification and emerging engine technologies in motorsports, while Dodson highlighted UTI’s expansion into EV training and robotics.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Both Yates and Dodson underscored the importance of embracing change and fostering collaboration to ensure the industry’s continued growth.
“Motorsports is evolving, and we’re excited to be part of that journey,” Yates said. “Our goal is to continue pushing boundaries while staying true to what makes racing special.”
Dodson added, “Whether it’s feeding the race teams or equipping students with life-changing skills, our mission is clear: to create opportunities and win—not just on the track, but in life.”
