Ford Performance’s Mark Rushbrook Discusses Global Motorsport Success and Future Technologies
Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance, provided an in-depth look at Ford’s motorsport achievements, strategies, and technological advancements during an exclusive session at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week. The discussion highlighted Ford’s diverse involvement in racing, from NASCAR to Formula 1, and its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
A Year of Triumphs Across Disciplines
Reflecting on Ford’s stellar year in motorsports, Rushbrook emphasized the brand’s success across various racing platforms.
“It’s been a great year. We love competing, and we love it even more when we win races and championships,” he said. With championships in NASCAR’s Cup and Truck Series and strong showings in NHRA, World Rally Championship (WRC), and sports car racing, Ford demonstrated its versatility and competitive edge.
In NASCAR, Ford-supported teams secured five out of six championships in the top three series over the last two years. “In the U.S., NASCAR is our bread and butter, and the success of teams like Team Penske, RFK Racing, and Front Row Motorsports reflects the depth of talent and resources we bring to the table,” Rushbrook added.
A Global Motorsports Strategy
Ford’s approach to racing is rooted in a four-quadrant strategy:
Mustang Racing: Mustang competes globally in NASCAR, NHRA, Supercars, Formula Drift, and sports car series like GT3 and GT4. Rushbrook described Mustang as “the best-selling sports car globally,” emphasizing its significance in Ford’s racing lineup.
Off-Road Dominance: With vehicles like the Bronco and Raptor, Ford has made significant strides in off-road racing, including the Baja 1000 and King of the Hammers. Ford’s upcoming entry in the 2024 Dakar Rally with the Raptor T1+ exemplifies its commitment to proving the rugged capabilities of its trucks on a global stage.
Electric Innovation: Ford has created unique platforms for electric racing, such as custom-built demonstrators for events like Pikes Peak and Goodwood, instead of joining existing electric series. “These projects are rolling test beds for innovation and marketing,” Rushbrook noted.
Formula 1: Ford’s partnership with Red Bull Racing is set to make its debut in 2026. Rushbrook highlighted the intense collaboration, including Ford’s role in developing hybrid power units with sustainable fuels. “It’s a fast-paced, innovative partnership that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in motorsport.”
Technological Synergy: Racing and Road Cars
Ford’s motorsport endeavors directly influence its production vehicles. The Ford Performance Center in Concord, North Carolina, houses state-of-the-art simulators and aerodynamics development facilities used for both race cars and road vehicles.
“The same simulators used by our NASCAR teams are also helping develop road cars like the Mustang Mach-E,” Rushbrook shared. “It’s a perfect example of how racing accelerates innovation for production vehicles.”
Looking to the Future: Sustainability and Evolution
Rushbrook addressed the evolving landscape of motorsports, including the role of hybrid and sustainable technologies. While full-electric racing hasn’t resonated with fans in the same way as traditional formats, Ford continues to explore opportunities across all powertrain types.
“Combustion engines paired with hybrid systems and sustainable fuels offer a compelling story for racing and the environment,” Rushbrook said. “The future of motorsports lies in adapting to fan expectations while embracing responsible technologies.”
Exciting Times Ahead
As Ford prepares for the 2024 Dakar Rally and continues to evolve its programs in NASCAR, NHRA, and global racing series, Rushbrook remains optimistic about the road ahead.
“With programs spanning the globe, Ford Performance is uniquely positioned to lead the charge in motorsport innovation,” he concluded.
