Formula DRIFT President Ryan Sage Discusses Milestones, Challenges, and the Future at EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week
Formula DRIFT President and co-founder Ryan Sage joined EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week to reflect on the series’ 21-year legacy, its unique position in motorsports, and exciting changes on the horizon. Sage’s insights touched on the evolution of the sport, the closure of Irwindale Speedway, innovative competition formats, and Formula DRIFT’s future.
Farewell to Irwindale: The "House of Drift"
Sage addressed the impending closure of Irwindale Speedway, the birthplace of Formula DRIFT and a venue synonymous with the sport. After years of speculation, 2024 will mark the final season at the iconic Southern California track.
“Irwindale has been a cornerstone of Formula DRIFT since our inception,” said Sage. “Its closure is bittersweet, but it reflects the challenges motorsports venues face in high-value real estate markets like Southern California. We’re actively planning for a new venue that carries the prestige and accessibility of Irwindale while maintaining our West Coast roots.”
Sage hinted at exciting plans for the 2025 finale but remained tight-lipped about specifics, emphasizing the need for a sustainable and impactful replacement venue.
Innovative Tandem Competition Format
In 2024, Formula DRIFT introduced a tandem qualifying format, a departure from the traditional single-run system. This change aimed to streamline event schedules and enhance the entertainment value for fans and drivers.
“The tandem format highlights the essence of drifting—dynamic, head-to-head battles,” Sage explained. “It’s been a learning experience, but the response has been overwhelmingly positive. We saw some of the best drifting performances this year during seeding rounds, showcasing the depth of talent in the field.”
Sage noted that adjustments are planned to refine the format further in 2025, ensuring a balance between excitement and practicality for teams and fans alike.
Accessibility and Growth in Drifting
Formula DRIFT’s low barrier to entry has been a defining feature, making it one of the most accessible motorsports globally. Sage detailed the pathway for aspiring drivers, emphasizing that with determination, a racer can progress from Pro-Am to the Pro championship in as little as two years.
“Drifting is unique in that it’s accessible to drivers from all backgrounds,” Sage said. “This sport thrives on passion and creativity, not just high-dollar budgets. That inclusivity has been pivotal to its growth.”
Sage also credited the rise of social media for amplifying Formula DRIFT’s reach. The series’ open media rights model allows drivers and teams to share content freely, fueling engagement and sponsorship opportunities. “Social media has been a game-changer for us,” he said. “It’s one of the pillars of our success, enabling drivers to build personal brands and connect directly with fans.”
Challenges and Identity
Reflecting on two decades of leadership, Sage acknowledged the challenges of establishing drifting as a legitimate motorsport while preserving its unique identity.
“Drifting isn’t traditional motorsport, and we’ve embraced that,” Sage stated. “We’re not racing from point A to point B. We’re about style, skill, and creativity. That identity has set us apart, and we’ve leaned into it rather than seeking validation from conventional motorsports.”
He also highlighted the importance of adaptability in a constantly evolving entertainment landscape. “The motorsports world is always changing, and staying ahead requires a balance of innovation and respect for our roots.”
Looking Ahead
As Formula DRIFT enters its 22nd season, Sage remains optimistic about the future. From identifying new venues to refining competition formats and fostering the next generation of talent, the series continues to evolve while staying true to its core values.
“Formula DRIFT is more than a sport; it’s a community,” Sage concluded. “Our success lies in our ability to innovate, engage, and remain authentic. We’re excited for what’s ahead.”
