General Motors Reflects on a Stellar Year in Motorsports

Jim Campbell, Vice President of GM Performance & Motorsports, joined EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week to share insights into GM’s 2024 motorsports successes. With victories across NASCAR, IMSA, NHRA, IndyCar, and Supercars, GM continues to push the boundaries of performance engineering and competitive racing.

NASCAR: Sweeping the Manufacturer’s Championship

Chevrolet achieved a clean sweep in the NASCAR Manufacturer’s Championship across all three series—Cup, Xfinity, and Truck—for the second consecutive year. Highlights included 15 Cup wins, with triumphs at the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400, and dominance in the Truck Series with 12 victories.

“Winning the Manufacturer’s Championship is one of our primary goals each year,” said Campbell. “This season’s success is a testament to our teams, drivers, and the innovative tools we’ve developed at our GM Charlotte Technical Center.”

IMSA & WEC: Cadillac and Corvette’s Global Presence

Cadillac showcased its prowess in endurance racing, earning six pole positions in IMSA and competing in both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). While falling short of championship wins, Campbell emphasized the hypercompetitive nature of the series and the team’s determination to improve.

“We are excited to expand to five Cadillac entries across IMSA and WEC in 2025,” Campbell announced. “With Action Express, Wayne Taylor Racing, and JOTA, we’re poised to compete at the highest level.”

On the GT front, the Corvette Z06 GT3.R celebrated a successful inaugural year, with further expansion planned in 2025. New team DXDT Racing will join the GTD grid, including notable driver Robert Wickens. “The demand for the Z06 GT3.R has been incredible, and we’re excited to see it race globally,” Campbell said.

IndyCar: Dominance at Indianapolis

Chevrolet earned its ninth Manufacturer’s Championship in the 2.2L era, highlighted by Josef Newgarden’s back-to-back Indianapolis 500 wins. The team also celebrated eight Chevrolets on the starting grid’s top spots and multiple wins throughout the season.

“IndyCar has deep roots in Chevrolet’s history, and this season demonstrated our commitment to innovation and performance,” said Campbell. “The debut of hybrid powertrains was a significant milestone, made possible by collaboration across OEMs and series leadership.”

NHRA: Record-Breaking Rookie and Veteran Excellence

Chevrolet enjoyed a banner year in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Austin Prock delivered a historic rookie season in Funny Car with eight wins and multiple records, while Greg Anderson claimed his sixth Pro Stock championship.

“From Austin’s record-breaking performances to Greg’s legendary consistency, this season was truly special,” Campbell said. “We are incredibly proud of all our drivers and teams.”

Global Success in Supercars

In the Australian Supercars Championship, Chevrolet claimed 16 wins and a 1-2 finish in the drivers’ standings, solidifying its dominance in the manufacturer rivalry with Ford.

“Supercars continue to highlight Chevrolet’s performance capabilities,” said Campbell. “The passionate fan base and fierce competition make every victory meaningful.”

A Vision for the Future

As GM transitions its motorsports strategy, Campbell hinted at continued investment in platforms like the Camaro and Corvette while exploring new opportunities. “We remain committed to delivering thrilling racing experiences and advancing technology on and off the track,” Campbell concluded.
