Global Time Attack and Super Lap Battle Reflect on 20 Years of Time Attack Racing in the U.S.

Jason Dienhart, President and CEO of Global Time Attack (GTA) and Super Lap Battle, celebrated 20 years of Time Attack racing in the United States during an engaging session at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week. Reflecting on the sport’s journey, Dienhart highlighted Time Attack's transformation into a globally recognized motorsport phenomenon, its innovations, and its growing influence on the racing community.

The Evolution of Time Attack in North America

Time Attack, originally inspired by Japanese circuits such as Tsukuba, was introduced to the U.S. in 2004 by Super Street Magazine and Sport Compact Car. Dienhart played a pivotal role in developing the sport, evolving it into a major motorsport category. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Buttonwillow Raceway Time Attack, a testament to the sport’s enduring appeal.

“Time Attack is like drag racing on a road circuit—a perfect lap is the goal,” said Dienhart. “It’s pure, innovative, and requires every team member to excel. That’s what makes it so exciting for competitors and fans alike.”

A Thriving Global Sport

GTA has expanded its reach, hosting flagship events at premier venues like Circuit of the Americas (COTA), Road Atlanta, and Buttonwillow. The series’ blend of technical innovation and accessibility has drawn drivers ranging from grassroots enthusiasts to international competitors.

Time Attack is unique in its inclusivity and creativity. The relaxed rules encourage innovation, enabling diverse car builds and fostering international competition. “We’re seeing more U.S. teams heading to Japan and Australia, and international competitors coming here,” Dienhart noted. “This exchange is key to Time Attack’s future growth.”

Major Events and Records in 2025

Dienhart shared a preview of GTA’s exciting 2025 calendar:
  • Super Lap Battle at Circuit of the Americas (April 11-13): The flagship event showcases the fastest Time Attack builds in the world, alongside drifting ride-alongs, a car show, and fan engagement activities.
  • Ascend at Pikes Peak International Raceway (June 28-29): Featuring a $50,000 prize purse, this event emphasizes Time Attack’s competitive and spectator appeal.
  • Road Atlanta and Ridge Motorsports Park Events: Offering regional drivers and teams opportunities to participate on iconic circuits.
Dienhart also hinted at a return to the Southwest with a possible event at the Podium Club in Arizona.

Challenges and Innovations

Reflecting on the challenges of sustaining Time Attack over two decades, Dienhart emphasized the importance of innovation and partnerships with tracks and sponsors. The growing role of social media and online content has also amplified the sport's visibility, allowing drivers and teams to build massive followings.

"Drivers like Ferris Cartumi and Cole Palson not only set track records but also engage fans worldwide through compelling content," Dienhart explained. "Their efforts help bring Time Attack to new audiences."

Looking Ahead: The Future of Time Attack

Dienhart envisions a bright future for Time Attack, with increased international collaboration, stronger domestic growth, and heightened competition. “The next five to ten years will see the sport become even more global, with teams from Europe, Japan, and Australia joining North American events,” Dienhart predicted.
