Jay Frye Discusses INDYCAR’s Evolution and Vision for the Future

At EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, Jay Frye, President of INDYCAR, shared insights into the series’ recent accomplishments and future directions. From the successful integration of hybrid technology to exciting new events on the horizon, Frye emphasized INDYCAR’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and providing fans with world-class racing.

A Milestone for Hybrid Technology

The introduction of hybrid power units in the 2024 season marked a significant technological leap for INDYCAR. Reflecting on its success, Frye highlighted the reliability of the new system: “From the Milwaukee open test to the end of the season, we logged almost 92,000 miles with the hybrid unit. The technology performed exceptionally well, thanks to the efforts of Honda, Chevrolet, and our entire paddock.”

With the hybrid system providing a 50-60 horsepower boost, drivers have embraced its potential. Frye noted, “The hybrid adds a new strategic element. It’s been fascinating to see how drivers utilize it, particularly on ovals, where opinions vary on its impact. Next year, we’ll see the hybrid in action at the Indy 500, which promises to be a game-changer.”

Looking ahead, INDYCAR plans to maintain the hybrid system in combination with the push-to-pass feature through 2026, with potential enhancements slated for 2027.

Expanding the Calendar with Strategic Additions

INDYCAR’s 2024 schedule includes 17 races, maintaining a balance between iconic venues and new additions. Frye emphasized the focus on quality over quantity: “It’s not about the number of races; it’s about creating big, impactful events. For example, our partnership with the Dallas Grand Prix brings in major players like the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys to ensure a premier experience.”

Another noteworthy addition is Thermal Club, which has transitioned from a test venue to a championship race location. “Thermal has invested heavily, adding 600 feet to pit road to meet our standards. We believe it will deliver a unique and exciting race,” Frye stated.

INDYCAR is also in discussions about potential races in Mexico City and other international locations but remains focused on solidifying its presence in key U.S. markets.

Looking to the Future: Next-Gen INDYCAR

As INDYCAR charts its path to 2027, Frye outlined plans for a lighter, more nimble car while prioritizing safety and cost-efficiency. “Our current car is historic in its performance and safety, but we’re working on what’s next. We’ve formed working groups to explore materials, aerodynamics, and hybrid advancements to define the next-generation INDYCAR.”

The series is also pursuing a long-awaited goal: adding a third engine manufacturer. “We’ve had strong interest, and discussions are ongoing about creating an entry point that’s financially viable and technologically competitive. Honda and Chevrolet have been excellent partners and remain supportive of bringing in a third OEM.”

Strengthening Partnerships and Fan Engagement

INDYCAR’s new broadcast deal with Fox promises increased visibility, with all races now airing on network television. Frye highlighted the impact: “We’re already seeing promotional efforts on NFL Sundays and expect a 25% uptick in viewership compared to last year.”

Frye also touched on the importance of maintaining legacy events like the Long Beach Grand Prix while enhancing newer races like the Nashville Championship Finale. “We’re blending tradition with innovation to deliver a diverse and exciting schedule.”

Collaboration and Growth

When asked about his leadership style, Frye emphasized the importance of collaboration: “We involve drivers, teams, and stakeholders in key decisions. Their input is invaluable, and while we ultimately make the calls, building consensus ensures we’re moving in the right direction.”

As INDYCAR faces growing competition from other motorsport series, Frye remains optimistic: “A rising tide lifts all boats. F1’s presence in the U.S. is not a threat but an opportunity for motorsport to thrive. Fans will continue to embrace INDYCAR for its unique blend of speed, innovation, and competition.”

INDYCAR’s Bright Horizon

With the successful integration of hybrid technology, a stable schedule, and forward-looking plans, INDYCAR is poised for continued growth. “We’re building on a strong foundation,” Frye concluded. “From technical advancements to marquee events, the future of INDYCAR has never been more exciting.”
