John Doonan, President of IMSA, Highlights Record-Breaking 2024 Season and Exciting Future
During his keynote session at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, IMSA President John Doonan shared insights into the organization’s record-breaking 2024 season and previewed a promising 2025, filled with new teams, technologies, and innovations. Doonan’s remarks celebrated IMSA’s growth while underscoring its commitment to delivering world-class motorsport experiences.
A Record-Setting 2024
IMSA experienced unprecedented success in 2024, including record attendance at 11 of 12 events and fully subscribed grids across its series. Doonan noted that the challenge of managing pit lane and paddock space underscored IMSA’s growing popularity.
“2024 was a year of milestones,” said Doonan. “From packed grandstands to full grids, the sport continues to thrive. These achievements reflect the passion of our teams, manufacturers, and fans, who have made IMSA a global motorsport powerhouse.”
IMSA also welcomed its 19th manufacturer, Cupra, expanding its diverse roster of automotive brands competing in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and beyond.
A Thriving Fan Base
IMSA’s fan engagement surged in 2024, driven by strategic partnerships and content innovations. The organization extended its media partnership with NBC Sports through 2031 and saw a 54% growth in Peacock streaming views. IMSA’s YouTube channel, which added 250,000 new subscribers this year, has reached over 115 million views since its launch in 2013.
“Our fans are connecting with IMSA in more ways than ever before,” Doonan explained. “From our YouTube series When the Weekend to full-length race broadcasts, we’re meeting audiences wherever they are. These efforts are introducing IMSA to a new generation of motorsport enthusiasts.”
Innovations for 2025
Looking ahead, IMSA is set to elevate its on-track product with groundbreaking updates for the 2025 season. Key highlights include:
- New Entries in GTP and GT3: The Aston Martin Valkyrie will debut in GTP, while Genesis will soon enter the top category. The addition of Cupra and new GT3 platforms in the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge further diversifies the grid.
- Rule Adjustments: IMSA has separated qualifying and race starts for GTD and GTD Pro, emphasizing class distinctions. The introduction of torque sensors in GT3 categories will enhance balance-of-performance metrics.
- Expanded Media Offerings: IMSA will launch two dedicated network broadcasts on NBC to build storylines and educate fans, starting with a January 4 preseason show.
“The cars remain the stars of IMSA,” Doonan said. “With new entries, enhanced competition, and a focus on fan education, we’re excited to deliver even more compelling racing in 2025.”
Celebrating Perseverance: Robbie Wiggins’ Return
Doonan highlighted Robbie Wiggins’ inspiring journey as a symbol of IMSA’s inclusivity and innovation. Wiggins, who overcame significant physical challenges, will join the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2025, supported by cutting-edge hand control systems developed by Bosch and GM Performance.
“Robbie’s story is one of perseverance and determination,” said Doonan. “His return showcases IMSA’s commitment to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for all competitors.”
A Robust Pipeline for Future Talent
IMSA continues to cultivate motorsport talent through its one-make championships, including the Mazda MX-5 Cup, Porsche Carrera Cup, Lamborghini Super Trofeo, and Ferrari Challenge. These series serve as developmental platforms for drivers, engineers, and teams aspiring to join the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
“Our one-make series are the foundation of IMSA’s future,” Doonan explained. “They nurture talent and provide a pathway for growth, ensuring the sport’s long-term success.”
The Road to 2025
With just 45 days until the Rolex 24 at Daytona, IMSA is gearing up for another landmark season. Doonan teased additional announcements, new teams, and thrilling competition as the series continues its upward trajectory.
“We’re proud stewards of endurance sports car racing,” Doonan concluded. “As we prepare for 2025, we remain committed to growing the sport and delivering unforgettable experiences for fans worldwide.”
