Ken Schrader Reflects on Legendary Career and Passion for Racing at EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week
American professional racing driver and team owner Ken Schrader joined EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week to discuss his enduring love for racing, his incredible career spanning over 50 years, and his ongoing commitment to the sport that has defined his life. Speaking from his motorhome—parked at a gas station on his way to Indiana for maintenance—Schrader showcased the grit and humor that have endeared him to fans for decades.
A True Racing Nomad
Schrader’s dedication to racing is unparalleled. With over 100 race days logged in 2024, he continues to compete across the U.S., driving modifieds on dirt and pavement tracks. Despite the cancellation of his final race this year due to weather, Schrader celebrated a season of 14 wins at 10 different tracks.
“When it makes sense—or sometimes even when it doesn’t—I just want to race,” Schrader shared. “I’m still having as much fun as ever, so I don’t see any reason to stop.”
Federated Auto Parts: A 25-Year Partnership
Schrader highlighted his decades-long partnership with Federated Auto Parts, a collaboration that extends beyond the track. Through their unique “play dates,” Schrader travels the country with modified race cars, offering Federated members and customers the chance to experience driving on track.
“We go coast to coast, bringing cars to tracks where customers can suit up and drive,” he explained. “It’s a blast seeing people light up after making laps, even if we have to jump in the two-seater and show them how it’s done.”
Racing Across America
A testament to his relentless spirit, Schrader has raced in 48 U.S. states, with only Hawaii and Rhode Island left to check off the list. While opportunities to race in Hawaii have arisen, Schrader admitted, “I’d rather race closer to home than travel that far.” His journey also includes racing internationally, including a memorable stop in Australia.
Reflections on NASCAR and Grassroots Racing
Schrader spent 29 years competing in NASCAR, making a name for himself with iconic teams and owners like Elmo Langley and Junie Donlavey. Reflecting on his NASCAR career, Schrader expressed gratitude while acknowledging the draw of grassroots racing.
“As NASCAR opportunities dried up, I turned back to dirt racing, where I knew I could still contend for wins,” Schrader said. “I’m proud of my NASCAR years, but nothing beats the simplicity and joy of running dirt cars.”
A Life Built Around Racing
Beyond driving, Schrader is deeply involved in motorsports as a track owner and operator. For 30 years, he and his partners have run Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Missouri. The track has thrived, especially in recent years, as local fans have rediscovered the excitement of weekly racing.
“COVID made people realize how much they missed having a track nearby. It’s been great to see people staying local and enjoying the races,” Schrader noted.
Enduring Love for the Sport
When asked about his longevity and what keeps him returning to the track, Schrader emphasized his unwavering passion. “Racing is my golf game,” he joked. “I don’t fish or have other hobbies. I just head to the shop, work on cars, and get ready to race. That’s what I love.”
He also acknowledged the evolving nature of racing, praising today’s drivers for their relentless competitiveness. “Back in the day, you could take it easy for a while. Now, these guys drive flat-out every lap. The sport has changed, but the thrill of competition remains the same.”
A Humorous Outlook
True to his personality, Schrader brought humor to the discussion, reflecting on memorable moments like racing with Elmo Langley and interacting with fans at events. His perspective is rooted in the joy of the journey: “Wherever you’re racing that night, that’s your favorite track. And leaving with the trophy makes it even better.”
