Ligier Automotive North America CEO Mo Murray Discusses the Brand’s Legacy and Future on EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week

At EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week, Mo Murray, CEO of Ligier Automotive North America, took center stage to share insights into the storied past and exciting future of Ligier Automotive. With deep roots in motorsport and ambitious plans for innovation and development, Ligier is poised to strengthen its presence in North America and continue its legacy as a premier race car manufacturer.

A Legacy Built on Innovation and Friendship

Murray reflected on Ligier’s rich history, beginning with founder Guy Ligier’s transition from driver to constructor. Established in the 1970s, Ligier gained prominence in Formula 1, highlighted by six Grand Prix victories and a historic win at the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix with Olivier Panis, powered by Honda. The brand's tradition of naming all cars with the initials "JS" honors Ligier’s late friend and racing partner, Jo Schlesser, who tragically lost his life at the 1968 French Grand Prix.

“Every Ligier car, from Formula 1 to today’s endurance and development platforms, carries the ‘JS’ designation in memory of Jo,” said Murray.

A Modern Motorsport Powerhouse

Ligier Automotive’s resurgence in recent decades has seen the brand diversify its portfolio and consolidate its operations under the leadership of Jacques Nicolet. The company now boasts a range of state-of-the-art race cars, including the LMP2 and LMP3 platforms, the Ligier European Series, and the Lamborghini GTP car for IMSA and WEC.

Murray highlighted the importance of Ligier’s U.S. headquarters in North Carolina, which serves as the production hub for F4 and Formula Regional cars and as a distributor for Ligier’s global race cars. “We support every Ligier-built car in North America, from parts distribution to on-site race support,” Murray explained. “Our team ensures that competitors have access to the quality and expertise that define the Ligier brand.”

Expanding Junior Racing and Driver Development

Ligier is at the forefront of junior racing, manufacturing FIA-compliant F4 and Formula Regional cars for the U.S. market. Murray emphasized the importance of safety, affordability, and career progression in these series.

“The F4 and Formula Regional platforms are built to the highest FIA safety standards, ensuring a secure environment for young drivers. Coupled with cost controls and the opportunity to earn super license points, Ligier cars provide a solid foundation for aspiring racers,” he said.

Murray also praised Tony Parella of Parella Motorsports Holdings for his commitment to reducing costs, including tire-use limits and capped car prices, which make Ligier’s development platforms some of the most affordable globally. Parella recently introduced a $100,000 scholarship for the Formula Regional champion starting in 2025, a move Murray believes will further enhance the series’ appeal.

The Future of the Ligier Brand in North America

One of Murray’s key objectives is to grow Ligier’s presence and recognition in the U.S., where the brand is still relatively niche compared to its European reputation. With its proven pedigree and a versatile lineup of race cars, Ligier is well-positioned to expand its influence.

“Our P3 platform is a favorite among gentlemen drivers, offering a rewarding experience without the complexity of higher-tier cars. It’s about making high-quality racing accessible to everyone, from young aspirants to seasoned enthusiasts,” Murray noted.

Pushing Technological Boundaries

Ligier is also advancing innovation with initiatives like a hydrogen-powered JS2R, which debuted at the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans. Developed in collaboration with Bosch, this project reflects Ligier’s commitment to exploring sustainable racing technologies.

“Our engineers are constantly exploring what’s next,” Murray said. “Whether it’s hydrogen power or new safety technologies, Ligier remains at the cutting edge of motorsport engineering.”

A Bright Future

Murray closed by emphasizing Ligier’s dedication to racing excellence and innovation: “Ligier has a legacy of building world-class race cars, and our mission is to continue that tradition while expanding our reach and supporting the next generation of racers.”

Ligier Automotive North America is set to build on its legacy while embracing modern challenges, from junior driver development to sustainable racing technologies.
