Marty Fiolka Showcases Crandon International Raceway’s Legacy and Growth at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week
Marty Fiolka, promoter of Crandon International Raceway, took center stage during EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, offering an in-depth look at the history, innovation, and cultural significance of one of off-road racing’s most iconic venues. As Crandon gears up for its 56th Annual World Championships in 2025, Fiolka reflected on the track's storied past, present advancements, and its magnetic allure for fans and racers alike.
The Legacy of Crandon: 55 Years of Excellence
Nestled in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, Crandon International Raceway began humbly in 1970 as the Brush Run 101, a 101-mile off-road loop through the forest. Over the decades, it has evolved into the world’s premier short-course off-road racing venue, hosting legendary events like the World Championship Off-Road Races and the Red Bull World Cup.
“Crandon is Americana at its finest,” Fiolka said. “It’s the Field of Dreams for off-road racing—steeped in tradition, deeply connected to its community, and unrivaled in its atmosphere.”
From Johnny and CJ Greaves to the late Kyle LeDuc, the Crandon victory list reads like a who’s who of off-road legends. As Fiolka noted, Walker Evans once said, “You can’t call yourself an off-road champion until you win at Crandon.”
Innovation Meets Tradition
Crandon’s unique blend of grassroots authenticity and cutting-edge innovation has propelled its growth. This year’s Red Bull World Cup featured a groundbreaking 15.5 hours of live coverage on MAVTV, marking the first time in off-road racing history that such extensive live television was produced. The event also introduced live in-car cameras powered by Starlink, revolutionizing real-time coverage of short-course racing.
“The live coverage and in-car footage changed the game,” Fiolka shared. “It showcased Crandon’s action-packed racing to a global audience while preserving the visceral, up-close experience that defines our sport.”
A Cultural Phenomenon
Beyond the thrilling races, Crandon offers a one-of-a-kind cultural experience. The track’s Labor Day Weekend World Championships draw nearly 60,000 fans, many camping on-site for days. The event features everything from grassroots sportsman racing to 950-horsepower Pro 4 trucks, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
Fiolka highlighted traditions like the downtown parade, where fans interact with drivers and explore race vehicles, and the patriotic opening ceremonies, where fans and drivers join together to sing “God Bless the USA”.
“This event isn’t just about racing; it’s about community, tradition, and a shared passion for off-road motorsports,” Fiolka said. “Our fans come back year after year, often for decades, because there’s nothing else like it.”
Preserving the Magic While Expanding the Reach
As Crandon’s promoter, Fiolka emphasized the importance of maintaining the track’s authenticity while attracting new audiences and partners. The track’s grassroots charm is its cornerstone, but innovations like improved hospitality and expanded media coverage are key to its future.
“Our focus is always on keeping Crandon’s unique magic intact,” Fiolka said. “It’s about offering partners and fans an experience that feels authentic and timeless, while pushing the sport forward in new and exciting ways.”
Looking Ahead
With its 56th Annual World Championships approaching, Crandon continues to solidify its place as the pinnacle of short-course off-road racing. Fiolka’s vision ensures the track will remain a beacon for the sport, blending tradition with innovation to captivate generations of fans.
