Mazda Motorsports Highlights 2024 Success and Future Initiatives at EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week

At EPARTRADE's 5th Annual Race Industry Week, Jonathan Applegate, Senior Manager of Mazda Motorsports, and Josh Smith, Business Development Manager of Mazda Motorsports, provided insights into Mazda’s transformative 2024 racing season and its vision for grassroots and professional motorsports development.

A Historic Season in MX-5 Cup Racing

Mazda's Whelan MX-5 Cup series once again delivered a season of edge-of-your-seat competition. The championship came down to the final laps at Road Atlanta, showcasing the razor-thin margins that define the series. Gresham Wagner, a two-time champion, emerged victorious after a fierce battle with defending champion Jared Thomas.

“Every year, the MX-5 Cup delivers a script you couldn’t write better,” Applegate shared. “The racing is intense, the talent is immense, and the community continues to foster a family-like atmosphere within the paddock. It’s inspiring to witness, and we can’t wait for 2025.”

The 2024 season also highlighted rising stars like Weston Workman, named Rookie of the Year after a string of podium finishes. His success reflects the MX-5 Cup’s ability to cultivate young talent in a competitive environment.

Expanding Opportunities: Heritage, Innovation, and Oval Racing

Mazda Motorsports expanded its scope in 2024 with innovative events like the MX-5 Cup’s first-ever oval race at Martinsville Speedway, run in conjunction with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series. The event attracted over 85,000 livestream views and introduced MX-5 Cup racing to a broader audience.

“The Martinsville race validated the diversity and adaptability of our platform,” Applegate noted. “The fans loved it, and the racing was phenomenal. We’re already looking at bringing it back for 2025.”

Mazda’s commitment to honoring its legacy was evident with the Mazda Heritage Collection. Historic cars like the RX-7 GTO and 767B graced events such as the HSR Classic Sebring 12-Hour, allowing fans to experience the brand’s iconic rotary-powered vehicles.

Grassroots Racing: The Heart of Mazda Motorsports

Mazda Motorsports continues to lead the grassroots racing community with its comprehensive support program. From the iconic Spec Miata and Spec MX-5 series to its parts program, Mazda provides aspiring racers with accessible paths to pursue their motorsport dreams.

“We support our racers at every level, from autocross enthusiasts to professional drivers,” Smith explained. “Our grassroots programs are designed to reduce barriers to entry and nurture talent, with initiatives like technical support, parts access, and contingency awards.”

Mazda’s scholarship programs have also become a critical springboard for young drivers. Noah Harmon, the latest scholarship recipient, exemplifies this pathway, having progressed through Spec Miata and Spec MX-5 to earn a full season in MX-5 Cup for 2025.

A Vision for the Future

Mazda Motorsports is not only focused on the present but also looking toward the future. With plans to revamp its parts website in early 2025, the team is committed to enhancing the customer experience. The redesign will feature improved navigation, detailed CAD drawings, and part recommendations, streamlining support for racers and teams.

“We’re always asking how we can improve,” Applegate said. “Whether it’s through technology, program development, or strategic partnerships, our goal is to support our racers and grow motorsports at every level.”

Conclusion

Mazda Motorsports’ 2024 season underscored its commitment to competitive racing, grassroots development, and innovation. From the thrilling MX-5 Cup battles to its comprehensive support programs, Mazda continues to lead the way in making motorsports accessible and exciting for all.
