McLaren reveals new Hypercar

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown and United Autosports co-owner Richard Dean were on hand in the Le Mans fan village on Saturday morning to show off the Woking brand's forthcoming Hypercar to the public for the first time.

The new prototype from McLaren is a Dallara-based LMDh, powered by a V6 twin-turbo engine developed in conjunction with Autotecnica Motori (ATM). It is set to compete in the top class of the FIA WEC from 2027 onwards.

The reveal of the first show car today follows news on Friday from McLaren that James Barclay has been appointed as team principal.

“This is what it’s all about. I’m a big fan of motorsport, and we’re so happy to be here in front of the fans with our new Hypercar. This will be the McLaren United AS Hypercar,” Brown said. “It is designed by our automotive group in collaboration with our racing team.”

“It’s a dream for United to partner with McLaren. They have set the standard high,” Richard Dean, in conversation with RACER after the reveal, added. "I feel ready for this, the timing is perfect for us. We've been watching others move from LMP2 to Hypercar and be successful. It gives us a lot of confidence that we can do the same job, and without a doubt, McLaren is the right partner.

"This has been in the making for a while, preparing for this and working with them. The level is so high, and that motivates us. We had time last night to reflect as a team on what was a crazy day yesterday. When I went to bed, all I could think of was this. You're lucky to be around at a certain period in history, and the WEC right now is perfect. The fans have voted.

"As for the car, I've been looking at CAD drawings and photos for a while, but last night was the first time I'd seen the car. It took me by surprise. It looks incredible in the flesh, and with the fans being there today, taking the cover off, it was a delight to see the reaction. Hearing it's a beautiful and fast-looking car is always a good sign."
