Melissa Eickhoff, CEO of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, Shares Insights at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week

Melissa Eickhoff, CEO of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), captivated audiences during EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, shedding light on the iconic race's enduring legacy, its role in automotive innovation, and the plans for the 103rd running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak Hill Climb, presented by Gran Turismo, set for June 22, 2025.

A Legacy of Excellence and Innovation

Known as the “Race to the Clouds,” the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been a motorsport staple since 1916. Eickhoff discussed the race’s unique blend of grassroots racing and cutting-edge technology, noting its growing appeal to both manufacturers and independent racers.

“The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is more than a race—it’s a proving ground for innovation,” said Eickhoff. “From electric vehicles to alternative fuels, manufacturers and racers use this event to push the boundaries of what’s possible in motorsport.”

Eickhoff highlighted the race’s evolving focus on records, including EV production, alternative fuel, and course-specific times, attracting global attention from top automakers like Hyundai and Ford while maintaining its grassroots spirit.

Balancing Tradition and Progress

The Hill Climb is invitation-only, ensuring a balance between high-tech factory efforts and grassroots racers. “We’re intentional about preserving the race’s legacy,” Eickhoff explained. “While we welcome innovation, we remain committed to supporting local racers and fostering a sense of community among competitors.”

This balance is achieved through a rigorous selection process, which evaluates safety, build quality, and racer experience. Eickhoff praised the camaraderie among participants, who share knowledge and support one another, united by their mutual respect for the mountain.

A Year-Round Challenge

Preparation for the Hill Climb is a year-round effort, requiring meticulous planning and logistical coordination. Eickhoff likened the race to events like the Indianapolis 500, where the action on race day is the culmination of months of preparation.

“Our sanctioned test weekends in early June allow competitors to acclimate to the altitude and unique conditions of the course,” Eickhoff said. “Altitude impacts every aspect of the race, and getting it right requires practice and precision.”

Opportunities for Fans and Volunteers

The Hill Climb is not just for competitors—it’s a community event that relies on dedicated volunteers and course officials. “We’re grateful for the support of our local community,” Eickhoff noted. “Generations of families have been part of this race, whether as racers, officials, or fans.”

Volunteer opportunities for the 2025 race open in February for course officials and March for general volunteers.

Looking Ahead to the 103rd Running

Eickhoff hinted at exciting developments for 2025, including enhanced livestreaming, expanded media coverage, and continued focus on GT4 and other competitive divisions. “It’s not about reinventing the wheel; it’s about getting better every year,” she said.

A Unique Stage for Storytelling

One of the Hill Climb’s most compelling aspects is the stories of its participants. “The race is a celebration of the human spirit,” Eickhoff said. “Whether you’re a local racer or part of a factory effort, reaching the summit is a monumental achievement.”

Through initiatives like the Behind the Wheel series and collaboration with sponsors, PPIHC highlights the diverse and inspiring journeys of its competitors, ensuring that every participant’s story is told.
