MotoGP Sporting Director Alfonso Cartujo Shares Insights on Racing, Logistics, and Sustainability

Alfonso Cartujo, Sporting Director of Dorna Sports (MotoGP), provided an exclusive look into the world of MotoGP during EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week. Cartujo highlighted MotoGP’s unparalleled global reach, the intense competition of the 2024 season, and the organization’s commitment to innovation, logistics, and sustainability as the sport gears up for an exciting 2025.

2024: A Season of Unmatched Competition and Global Impact

Reflecting on the 2024 season, Cartujo expressed pride in the championship's ability to consistently deliver electrifying races. The year concluded with Jorge Martin of Spain claiming the title, underscoring the sport’s competitive depth.

“This year, we crowned a new champion in Jorge Martin after a season filled with intense storylines that extended to the very last race,” said Cartujo. “Our fan attendance exceeded 3 million globally, with a record-breaking single-event turnout of nearly 300,000 in France. It’s a testament to the passion of our fans and the strength of our championship.”

2025: Logistics Mastery and New Challenges

As the MotoGP circuit spans multiple continents, seamless logistics play a critical role in ensuring each event’s success. Cartujo detailed the intricate planning required to move equipment and personnel from one venue to the next, often within days.

“After each race, teams pack up within hours, and everything is loaded onto chartered planes for transport,” he explained. “By Thursday morning at the next venue, pit boxes are fully set up, and teams are ready to begin preparations.”

With safety and track readiness paramount, MotoGP works closely with venues to ensure compliance with high standards, from surface quality to protective barriers. “2025 preparations began months ago,” noted Cartujo. “We’ve been working with venues to implement improvements and ensure they’re race-ready for the upcoming season.”

Technical Regulations: Balancing Innovation and Sustainability

MotoGP prides itself on fostering innovation while maintaining competition and cost efficiency. Cartujo emphasized the collaborative efforts between Dorna Sports, manufacturers, and the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) to achieve these goals.

“Our regulations ensure peak performance while maintaining fairness and sustainability,” he said. “For example, engine specifications like a 1,000 cc limit and strict design parameters prevent costs from escalating.”

MotoGP’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its fuel initiative. By 2027, the series aims to transition to 100% sustainable fuel, a move that aligns with global environmental standards and emphasizes leadership in green innovation.

Jorge Martin and the Rising Stars of MotoGP

2024 champion Jorge Martin exemplifies the determination and talent required to excel in MotoGP. A product of MotoGP’s talent pipeline, Martin’s journey from the Rookies Cup to the premier class underscores the series’ ability to nurture future champions.

“Martin’s resilience and drive are remarkable,” said Cartujo. “He overcame significant injuries to become a champion and is well on his way to becoming a MotoGP legend.”

Looking ahead, 2025 promises fierce competition, with Martin transitioning to Aprilia’s factory team and facing formidable opponents such as two-time champion Peko Bagnaia and rising star Pedro Acosta.

MotoGP’s Vision: Beyond Motorsports

MotoGP continues to evolve from a motorsport championship into a global entertainment brand. Cartujo highlighted the impact of Liberty Media’s involvement in expanding MotoGP’s global reach and appeal.

“We’re evolving into a broader entertainment entity while staying true to the essence of racing,” he said. “This partnership positions us for greater exposure and growth in new markets.”

MotoE and the Future of Electric Racing

MotoE, MotoGP’s electric racing series, has also seen significant advancements. With Ducati providing cutting-edge electric motorcycles, the series delivers thrilling sprint-style races. While other manufacturers have expressed interest, MotoGP has maintained a single-supplier approach to keep costs manageable.

A Global Legacy in Motion

As MotoGP prepares for its 2025 season, fans can expect thrilling races, state-of-the-art technology, and groundbreaking sustainability initiatives. With events spanning the globe, including a highly anticipated stop at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in the United States, MotoGP continues to solidify its reputation as the pinnacle of motorcycle racing.

“Every corner of every race represents the grit, skill, and passion of our riders and teams,” said Cartujo. “We’re excited to continue delivering unforgettable moments to our fans worldwide.”
