Preston Osborn Highlights Growth and Vision for American Rally Association at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week

During EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, Preston Osborn, Competition Director of the American Rally Association (ARA), shared an in-depth look at the organization’s rapid growth, dedication to grassroots motorsport, and ambitious vision for the future. With the 2025 season already underway, Osborn emphasized the ARA’s unique ability to balance professional and grassroots participation while fostering a growing interest in rallying across the United States.

A Dynamic Start to the 2025 Season

The 2025 ARA season is already in motion with regional events in Minnesota and California kicking off the calendar. Osborn noted that the increasing demand for rally events has led to an expanded schedule of 22-24 events, compared to just four in 2017.

“The growth we’ve seen is a testament to the passion of our competitors, organizers, and volunteers,” Osborn said. “Rally in the U.S. continues to evolve, offering opportunities for everyone—from grassroots racers to professional teams.”

Balancing Professionalism and Grassroots Motorsport

One of the ARA’s defining characteristics is its inclusive approach, offering a platform for factory-backed teams and everyday racers alike. From high-performance rally cars to unconventional builds like Ferrari-powered Subarus, Osborn celebrated the diversity of the field.

“Rallying in the U.S. thrives on variety,” Osborn remarked. “We welcome everything from world-class rally machines to home-built vehicles. It’s this blend that makes our sport so compelling.”

New Opportunities for Growth

Osborn highlighted the ARA’s commitment to engaging new fans and participants. A key element is the ARA Rally Sprint Series, which simplifies logistics and lowers barriers to entry for aspiring competitors. Additionally, partnerships with rally schools like DirtFish (Seattle), Rally Ready (Texas), and Tim O’Neil Rally School (East Coast) provide accessible entry points for newcomers.

“We’ve made it easier than ever to get involved,” Osborn said. “Whether through volunteering, rally sprints, or training programs, there’s a path for everyone.”

Impacting Communities and Expanding Reach

Rally events often take place in rural communities, bringing significant economic benefits. Osborn revealed that some national events generate over $3 million in local economic impact, strengthening partnerships with municipalities and fostering long-term growth.

“Our connection to these communities is vital,” Osborn explained. “We’re not just racing; we’re making a tangible impact on local economies.”

Looking ahead, Osborn expressed interest in expanding the series to new regions, citing recent successful additions in Tennessee and Kentucky as examples of how the ARA is growing its footprint.

Enhancing Spectator Engagement

Acknowledging the challenges of following rally events live, Osborn outlined plans to increase the sport’s digital presence through post-production media, live streaming, and short-form social media content.

“Rally is an adventure both on and off the course,” Osborn said. “Our next big task is to share that adventure with a wider audience. Telling the stories of our competitors and communities is key to engaging fans and growing the sport.”

Vision for the Future

In the next three to five years, Osborn hopes to see more OEM involvement and increased recognition for rallying alongside major U.S. motorsports like NASCAR and NHRA.

“We’re building something special,” Osborn concluded. “From grassroots racers to international competitors, the ARA is a vibrant, diverse series. Our goal is to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the biggest names in motorsport while staying true to our community roots.”
