SCCA President Michael Cobb Shares Vision for Growth and Grassroots Connection at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week

During his dynamic appearance at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, Michael Cobb, President and CEO of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), shared the organization’s latest initiatives and reaffirmed its dedication to grassroots motorsports. With over 2,000 annual events spanning road racing, solo competitions, time trials, and more, the SCCA continues to serve as a vital hub for motorsport enthusiasts across North America.

A Commitment to Grassroots Motorsports

Cobb opened by highlighting the sheer scale of the SCCA’s operations, with over 115 regional chapters hosting more than 100,000 participations annually. Despite its size, Cobb emphasized the club’s commitment to its core mission: delivering exceptional motorsports experiences for all levels of competition.

“We are purposed to serve grassroots enthusiasts,” Cobb said. “Whether you’re a seasoned road racer or someone exploring motorsports for the first time, there’s a place for you at the SCCA.”

New Programs to Attract Fresh Talent

Cobb outlined several new initiatives aimed at fostering participation and engaging younger demographics, including:
  • Spec MX-5 (SMX) Class: Launched in 2024, this NC-platform-based road racing class has attracted a younger demographic with its affordability, competitive racing, and high performance.
  • Club Spec Classes: Designed for Solo, Time Trials, and track events, these accessible platforms offer a versatile entry point for enthusiasts.
  • Track Night in America: With over 10,000 annual participations, this program introduces newcomers to track driving in a low-barrier, welcoming environment.
“These programs are not only driving growth but also helping us connect with a younger generation of motorsports enthusiasts,” Cobb explained.

Balancing Legacy and Future Growth

One challenge Cobb addressed was managing the evolution of SCCA’s offerings while honoring its rich history. This includes adapting to shifts in vehicle classes and participant needs while maintaining the integrity of long-standing programs.

“It’s a delicate balance,” Cobb admitted. “We’re constantly navigating the continuum of honoring our legacy while embracing the future of motorsport.”

To support classes impacted by participation changes, the SCCA is introducing bonus majors in 2025, creating additional opportunities for racers to compete at premier tracks.

Expanding Volunteer and Training Opportunities

Recognizing the essential role of volunteers, Cobb highlighted the launch of SCCA Academy, an online learning platform offering training for stewards, event leads, and flagging and communication (F&C) workers.

“We’ve had over 1,600 course completions this year alone,” Cobb shared. “This is critical for maintaining a strong pipeline of knowledgeable volunteers who are the backbone of our events.”

In partnership with IMSA, the SCCA also introduced a certification module to prepare volunteers for high-profile professional events, including the Rolex 24 and Formula 1 races.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Cobb shared his excitement for the year ahead, which includes:
  • Runoffs Return to Road America: The SCCA’s signature National Championship event heads back to the National Park of Speed.
  • Time Trials Nationals at Pitt Race: A new venue will host this hallmark event, building on its success at the National Corvette Museum.
  • Enhanced Club Race Experience: Efforts to grow accessibility and participation will continue through expanded programming and shootout-style competitions combining autocross and track events.
“We’re committed to creating exceptional motorsports experiences and ensuring everyone has a path to enjoy the thrill of the track,” Cobb concluded.
