Unlimited Off-Road Racing League’s Matt Martelli Showcases Expanding Series and Culture at EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week
Matt Martelli, visionary leader of the Unlimited Off-Road Racing League, joined the conversation during EPARTRADE’s 5th Annual Race Industry Week, offering insights into the league’s dynamic events, inclusive racing culture, and innovations driving the sport forward. Martelli’s discussion highlighted the league’s crown jewel, the Mint 400, as well as its growing portfolio of races and its role in advancing off-road motorsports in North America.
A Legacy of Grit: The Mint 400 and Beyond
Founded in 1968 as a promotional tool for Las Vegas’ Mint Hotel, the Mint 400 has evolved into North America’s largest desert off-road race. Martelli and his team revived the event to unparalleled heights, building on its storied history of attracting legendary racers like Parnelli Jones.
“Our culture was born out of World War II veterans and thrill-seekers,” Martelli explained. “The Mint 400 is a testament to their adventurous spirit and to the endurance racing community’s unyielding passion.”
The league has since expanded its footprint with additional premier races:
- The California 300 in Barstow, one of the birthplaces of desert racing
- The Parker 400, the second-oldest off-road race in North America
- The Reno 600, a new event set to deliver high-speed, technical desert action
Inclusivity Through Racing Classes
The Unlimited Off-Road Racing League boasts a staggering 60 racing classes, encompassing everything from million-dollar unlimited trucks to stock VW Beetles. UTVs (Utility Terrain Vehicles) have emerged as a standout category, with factory-built models making racing more accessible than ever.
“UTVs have revolutionized our sport,” Martelli noted. “For the first time, you can finance a race-ready vehicle, making off-road racing attainable for a broader audience. Our UTV classes alone field over 160 entries at the Mint 400.”
Innation in Media and Technology
A hallmark of the league’s success is its embrace of cutting-edge media and technology. Known for producing viral content like the Gymkhana series and XP1K, Martelli’s media company, Mad Media, has elevated the league’s visibility. Social media and livestreaming now allow the league to share the thrills of off-road racing with fans worldwide.
“We’ve taken control of our narrative,” Martelli said. “Livestreaming lets us bring the action to audiences who can’t attend in person, while new technologies like Starlink enable live, in-car footage for an immersive viewing experience.”
Beyond Racing: Events That Engage
The Mint 400 exemplifies the league’s commitment to creating immersive fan experiences. From the Mint 400 Parade down Las Vegas Boulevard to the Off-Road Festival on Fremont Street, the event transforms into a week-long celebration of off-road culture.
“In addition to the race, fans can enjoy live music, vendor expos, and short-course racing, making it an event that offers something for everyone,” Martelli said.
A Culture Rooted in Camaraderie and Inclusivity
Off-road racing’s appeal lies in its accessibility and communal spirit. Fans and racers alike can interact, explore vehicles up close, and feel part of a larger family. The league’s deep ties to military veterans, first responders, and youth racers further underscore its inclusive culture.
“This sport is uniquely American,” Martelli explained. “It’s about camaraderie, perseverance, and the thrill of pushing limits. Our veterans and first responders are integral to our community, bringing leadership and passion to the sport.”
The Future of Off-Road Racing
As the Unlimited Off-Road Racing League continues to expand, Martelli is focused on delivering even greater fan engagement and building the league’s presence nationwide.
“There’s nothing like off-road racing,” he said. “Whether you’re watching a live stream or standing trackside, the visceral power and spectacle of these vehicles are unmatched. We invite everyone to join us and experience it firsthand.”
